New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh continues her Hard Play series with a sweet, sexy romance featuring big, fat, OTT weddings, a meddling grandma, and a too-serious hero who needs to be unbuttoned...

Nayna Sharma agreed to an arranged marriage in the hope it would heal the fractures in her beloved family... only to realize too late that a traditional marriage is her personal nightmare. Panicked, she throws caution to the winds, puts on the tiniest dress she can find, and ends up in the arms of a tall, rough-edged hunk of a man who has abs of steel—and who she manages to mortally insult between one kiss and the next.

Abandoned as a child, then adopted into a loving family, Raj Sen believes in tradition, in continuity. Some might call him stiff and old-fashioned, but he knows what he wants—and it’s a life defined by rules...yet he can’t stop thinking about the infuriating and sexy woman who kissed him in the moonlight then disappeared. When his parents spring an introduction on him, the last woman he expects is her. Beautiful. Maddening. A rulebreaker in the making.

He’s all wrong for her. She’s all wrong for him. And love is about to make rebels of them both.

Okay so if you've been following my posts or tweets, then you'll probably know that Nalini Singh is a new-to-me author I've started reading early this year, and I've been a huge fan ever since. After devouring her paranormal works and loving her angels, vampires, and changelings, it's only right that I venture into her contemporary works as well.

Rebel Hard is my first, and holy shit it's SO GOOD. I basically said that about almost every Nalini book I've read so who's surprised? Not me, obviously.

Can't-Wait Wednesday (2): Archangel's Prophecy by Nalini Singh

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings to spotlight and discuss the yet-to-be released books we're excited to read. It is based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Hey guys!

I'm here again to share with you another book that I'm willing to offer my future seventhborn (since my future first- until sixth- babies are all booked) for the chance to read it now now now

Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s darkly passionate Guild Hunter world, where human-turned-angel Elena Deveraux, consort to Archangel Raphael, is thrust center stage into an eons-old prophecy....

Midnight and dawn, Elena’s wings are unique among angelkind…and now they’re failing. The first mortal to be turned into an immortal in angelic memory, she’s regressing. Becoming more and more human. Easier to hurt. Easier to kill.

Elena and Raphael must unearth the reason for the regression before it’s too late and Elena falls out of the sky. Yet even as they fight a furious battle for Elena’s very survival, violent forces are gathering in New York and across the world.

In China, the Archangel Favashi is showing the first signs of madness. In New York, a mysterious sinkhole filled with lava swallows a man whole. In Africa, torrential monsoon rains flood rolling deserts. And in Elena’s mind whispers a haunting voice that isn’t her own.

This time, survival may not be possible…not even for the consort of an archangel.

UGH I'm so impatient for this book! Still a bit sad that my Wish on Netgalley doesn't seem to have any chance of being granted (I mean I know the function's kaput so I shouldn't be as disappointed but still).

Anyway, Elena and Raphael are one of my favourite couples and I'm ready to be reunited with them again. They're both so fiercely protective over each other, they command respect every time they enter a room, and they're each other's strength and weakness. They are truly that power couple. Also, the blurb gave me chills. Elena's a baby immortal and now she's regressing??? What is happening??? And oh my god, what is going on with Favashi???

Believe it or not, I've been consistently reading Nalini Singh since the beginning of the year and I have zero regrets. I mentioned in my Sunday Update that I'm in the middle of binge-reading Psy-Changeling, and currently I'm on Tangle of Need. Riaz and Adria are truly giving me all the feels right now.

Lisa's June Reading Recap

Hello, everyone! How have you been?

It feels so long since my last post. In my defense, Eid was two weeks ago so naturally I did zero reading that week (plus I was out of town and didn't have access to the Internet), and I still had Eid withdrawals last week and still did zero reading.

This week was relatively better. I managed to finish some books so I consider that a feat.

Unrelated to reading news, I finished my Masters degree! I've submitted my thesis and now officially unemployed while waiting for my graduation ceremony in November. I should be job-hunting, but taking that first step is so scary! I've been in school for 10 years and it's been a comfort zone for me.

Anyway, I figured I'd do a June reading recap. I managed to finish 13 books this month, a small number for me, but eh. Hopefully my July will be better reading-wise.

 ★★★★  to  ★★★★★

2018 is truly the year of Nalini Singh for me. Her Guild Hunter series has fast become one of my ultimate favourite series, and because I'm having trouble getting into the only book I have left unread in Guild Hunter, I decided to dive into Nalini's Psy-Changeling series because apparently that's the most logical solution, y/y

Slave to Sensation was phenomenal! I rated it a 5 because I just couldn't put it down once I started. It's sexy, addictive, and fast-paced, and I love how Nalini wrote the world of the Psy and Changelings. I like the concept of the Silence and PsyNet (scary as they are). I basically shipped Sascha and Lucas from the moment they met. I love the tension between them, and the sexy dreams (!!!). It got really emotional halfway towards the end because forbidden love and all that, and I was basically crying in the end. Visions of Heat was no less great; it featured another Psy-Changeling pairing that I would die for. Vaughn is a total hottie where can I get one?

Ainslie Paton is one of my current favs. Her latest book, One Night Wife, featured a Robin Hood-ish anti-hero that I love. There were cons in the story that kind of reminded me of Ally Carter's Heist Society and the tv show Leverage, and also fake relationship (!!!). I love that Cal, the hero, came from a family of conmen (it's a family business!); I hope that we get to see more families (because it was mentioned that the Sherwood family has alliance families as well) as the series progressed.

Sara Rider is a new-to-me author, and Real Kind of Love was a delight to read. Our heroine, Clementine, is an audiobook narrator who found herself in a block of a sort after she was asked to narrate her first romance novel. This book also had fake relationship, and I've recently reviewed it here.

When I first found out that Tessa Bailey and Eve Dangerfield were writing a book together, I completely freaked out. I just couldn't imagine the level of smut that book would bring, and Captivated totally exceeded my expectations in that area. This book was hot as hell! I love that I could tell Tessa's and Eve's writing styles apart, and the styles meshed together very well too. There's a bit of age gap, and also Beauty & the Beast vibe.

Mina V. Esguerra is a Filipino author I followed on Twitter and whose books I hoarded but never read, until this one. And boy, why didn't I read her sooner? What Kind of Day was just the kind of book I needed to get out of my reading slump. Our heroine, Naya, is a Manila tour guide, and our hero, Ben is a political speechwriter who's recently fired from his job. They met when Ben accidentally joined Naya's tour group after he was fired. I think the reason why I connected with these characters is because they are both in their thirties and still having doubts about their future (me, an almost-30 unemployed woman full of self-doubt: *wipes tear* I feel this so hard).

Also, this book made me bump up Manila on my Dream Cities to Visit list. Manila is just a 4 hour flight from KL and the tickets are fairly cheap, so I don't know why I haven't visited yet.

These books I enjoyed recently were both written by Australian authors. Kissing Games by Tara Eglington is a Young Adult romance and the second book in the series, and it's even better than the first! And look how cute the US cover is!

C.J. Duggan is the author of my favourite NA series called Summer, and I haven't read any of her newer works outside of that series because....I don't have a good reason but anyway, I bought New York Nights when I was in Sydney because the hero is a single dad (typical Lisa), but I ended loving the heroine more. This book is actually the second in the Heart of Cities series but can be read as a standalone. I actually have the first book on Kobo so I might read that one next (plus, it's set in Paris, one of my favourite cities!).

★★★

Honestly, I started Hold by Claire Kent for the smut and left feeling very emotional about the hero and heroine. I love unexpected surprises, they are the best. This novella is classified as sci-fi erotica. I really like Riana the heroine, and Cain is your typical silent and broody hero (my type, obviously). Plus, it's still FREE!

I requested Touch Wood by Jenika Snow on Netgalley because I've read the second book and really liked it. I love Carina Press' Dirty Bits precisely because of that; the stories are all short and dirty. I had one tiny issue about how the H/h took a long time to even talk to each other, but other than that it was a quick and fun read.

★★ to ★★★

I read V.C. Lancaster's The E.T. Guy a while ago and really loved it. It's also my first time reading romance with aliens in it, and it was WILD. The New Guy and The Security Guy are second and third books in the Office Aliens series, and while I enjoyed them both, I think they weren't as good as the first book, mostly because I have issues with the heroes' behaviors.

The Bashful Bride is my first book by Vanessa Riley. I really loved how it started, but my enjoyment fizzled out halfway because I was annoyed by the heroine and the things she did. I rated it a 2.5 because I didn't root for the romance in the end and I personally felt the hero was better off without the heroine.

Of archangels, vampires, and magical human beings

Hey, everybody! How is your January so far? I talked to Nick earlier today and I was like, “Can you believe January is almost over?” Like, what did I even do this month? Time needs to chill the heck out.

Anyway, I started a Twitter thread for my 2018 reads early in the year. So far, I find it real convenient to update on my reading and gush about books in bullet points. No wonder bookish people like doing this kind of threads.

Now for some reading updates/series review:

Hidden Legacy series by Ilona Andrews [★★★★]

Yes, I have jumped on this bandwagon (albeit a little late).

Hidden Legacy is my first venture into urban fantasy, and I’m now clamouring for more! I’ve been hearing so many good things about HL, and I was able to borrow all three books (thanks, Eri!). I finally finished book #3, Wildfire a couple of days ago and just, wow.

I have so many feelings for the characters in this book. Nevada Baylor is strong-willed, feisty, and she has a big heart. I absolutely adore her and her family. I love her dedication to putting food on the table for them. The other members in the Baylor family are also excellent characters on their own: Nevada’s younger sisters Catalina and Arabella are forces of nature and I hope they both get their own spinoff novels, her younger cousins Leon and Bernard are precious I want to adopt them, and Nevada’s veteran mother and grandmother are total badasses.

I also have a lot of love for Connor “Mad” Rogan, the hero in this series. He can be such an ass sometimes but I love his protective streak, sarcasm, and scary ways. The fact that he’s a billionaire is also a plus, hahahah. The chemistry between Nevada and Rogan are so great *fans self*. I love their dynamics; I love Nevada for standing up to Rogan and telling Rogan point blank that she won't stand for some of his actions (especially when it comes to coddling her to keep her safe) because Rogan is an alpha male whose mind is permanently set to War and Survival mode and sometimes he can be a little unreasonable. His heart is in the right place, but he can be a little overwhelming.

I’m so buying the paperback copies as soon as I have spare money.

Guild Hunter 1-4 by Nalini Singh [★★★★]

I love the UK covers more than the US ones so I decided to display these instead.

This series is also one I heard a lot about, and it’s a little intimidating considering there’s so many books in this series. I finished four main books and a couple of prequel novellas in the past two weeks…I’m hooked. I haven’t read books with angels as characters ever since I finished Susan Ee’s Penryn and the End of Days trilogy, I think? Nalini Singh built a very interesting world where archangels command over vampires and humans, and there is an elite organization of vampire hunters called Guild Hunters to track down rogue vampires (those who breach their contracts with the angels etc.).

I’m super into the romance between Elena, one of the best Guild Hunters, and (super hot, super scary) archangel Raphael. The first book is full of tension between them, and book 2 and 3 are them basically being a power couple. Book 4 is about Dmitri, a vampire and Raphael’s right-hand man (right-hand vamp?).

I’m currently reading Book 5 which is about an angel named Jason, who’s a part of Raphael’s circle of trustworthy companions. It’s quite angsty so far because Jason’s a broody sort…

Please be warned that this series has a lot of violence: torture, murder, decapitation (surprisingly a lot), and book 4 has descriptions of rape that might be triggering.

I’ve been so busy reading books from these two series that I’ve been neglecting my January ARCs, LOL.

Until next time!

Read any good romances lately? Have you read these books?
