Lisa's Sunday Update (2)

Hi guys!

I haven't done a proper reading update in a while, welp. I have been sharing Can't Wait Wednesdays just to post something but I'm going to try and do better from now on.

It's the weekend and I have a new appreciation for it now, because I just started my full-time job on Wednesday! That's right, your girl is no longer funemployed and is now a working professional. The job isn't my first choice and isn't something I ever imagine myself doing in a million years, but it pays well and should be a good experience. I need to fund my book-buying habits and hopefully save some money for travel, LOL.

Today I'll be sharing some mini reviews of the books I read...a week ago? Two weeks ago? I can't remember the last time I finished a book because I've been in a weird headspace since I was confirmed for the job. I told my sister that I haven't touched my iPad since I started working and she was like, "Are you okay?"

Lisa's June Reading Recap

Hello, everyone! How have you been?

It feels so long since my last post. In my defense, Eid was two weeks ago so naturally I did zero reading that week (plus I was out of town and didn't have access to the Internet), and I still had Eid withdrawals last week and still did zero reading.

This week was relatively better. I managed to finish some books so I consider that a feat.

Unrelated to reading news, I finished my Masters degree! I've submitted my thesis and now officially unemployed while waiting for my graduation ceremony in November. I should be job-hunting, but taking that first step is so scary! I've been in school for 10 years and it's been a comfort zone for me.

Anyway, I figured I'd do a June reading recap. I managed to finish 13 books this month, a small number for me, but eh. Hopefully my July will be better reading-wise.

 ★★★★  to  ★★★★★

2018 is truly the year of Nalini Singh for me. Her Guild Hunter series has fast become one of my ultimate favourite series, and because I'm having trouble getting into the only book I have left unread in Guild Hunter, I decided to dive into Nalini's Psy-Changeling series because apparently that's the most logical solution, y/y

Slave to Sensation was phenomenal! I rated it a 5 because I just couldn't put it down once I started. It's sexy, addictive, and fast-paced, and I love how Nalini wrote the world of the Psy and Changelings. I like the concept of the Silence and PsyNet (scary as they are). I basically shipped Sascha and Lucas from the moment they met. I love the tension between them, and the sexy dreams (!!!). It got really emotional halfway towards the end because forbidden love and all that, and I was basically crying in the end. Visions of Heat was no less great; it featured another Psy-Changeling pairing that I would die for. Vaughn is a total hottie where can I get one?

Ainslie Paton is one of my current favs. Her latest book, One Night Wife, featured a Robin Hood-ish anti-hero that I love. There were cons in the story that kind of reminded me of Ally Carter's Heist Society and the tv show Leverage, and also fake relationship (!!!). I love that Cal, the hero, came from a family of conmen (it's a family business!); I hope that we get to see more families (because it was mentioned that the Sherwood family has alliance families as well) as the series progressed.

Sara Rider is a new-to-me author, and Real Kind of Love was a delight to read. Our heroine, Clementine, is an audiobook narrator who found herself in a block of a sort after she was asked to narrate her first romance novel. This book also had fake relationship, and I've recently reviewed it here.

When I first found out that Tessa Bailey and Eve Dangerfield were writing a book together, I completely freaked out. I just couldn't imagine the level of smut that book would bring, and Captivated totally exceeded my expectations in that area. This book was hot as hell! I love that I could tell Tessa's and Eve's writing styles apart, and the styles meshed together very well too. There's a bit of age gap, and also Beauty & the Beast vibe.

Mina V. Esguerra is a Filipino author I followed on Twitter and whose books I hoarded but never read, until this one. And boy, why didn't I read her sooner? What Kind of Day was just the kind of book I needed to get out of my reading slump. Our heroine, Naya, is a Manila tour guide, and our hero, Ben is a political speechwriter who's recently fired from his job. They met when Ben accidentally joined Naya's tour group after he was fired. I think the reason why I connected with these characters is because they are both in their thirties and still having doubts about their future (me, an almost-30 unemployed woman full of self-doubt: *wipes tear* I feel this so hard).

Also, this book made me bump up Manila on my Dream Cities to Visit list. Manila is just a 4 hour flight from KL and the tickets are fairly cheap, so I don't know why I haven't visited yet.

These books I enjoyed recently were both written by Australian authors. Kissing Games by Tara Eglington is a Young Adult romance and the second book in the series, and it's even better than the first! And look how cute the US cover is!

C.J. Duggan is the author of my favourite NA series called Summer, and I haven't read any of her newer works outside of that series because....I don't have a good reason but anyway, I bought New York Nights when I was in Sydney because the hero is a single dad (typical Lisa), but I ended loving the heroine more. This book is actually the second in the Heart of Cities series but can be read as a standalone. I actually have the first book on Kobo so I might read that one next (plus, it's set in Paris, one of my favourite cities!).

★★★

Honestly, I started Hold by Claire Kent for the smut and left feeling very emotional about the hero and heroine. I love unexpected surprises, they are the best. This novella is classified as sci-fi erotica. I really like Riana the heroine, and Cain is your typical silent and broody hero (my type, obviously). Plus, it's still FREE!

I requested Touch Wood by Jenika Snow on Netgalley because I've read the second book and really liked it. I love Carina Press' Dirty Bits precisely because of that; the stories are all short and dirty. I had one tiny issue about how the H/h took a long time to even talk to each other, but other than that it was a quick and fun read.

★★ to ★★★

I read V.C. Lancaster's The E.T. Guy a while ago and really loved it. It's also my first time reading romance with aliens in it, and it was WILD. The New Guy and The Security Guy are second and third books in the Office Aliens series, and while I enjoyed them both, I think they weren't as good as the first book, mostly because I have issues with the heroes' behaviors.

The Bashful Bride is my first book by Vanessa Riley. I really loved how it started, but my enjoyment fizzled out halfway because I was annoyed by the heroine and the things she did. I rated it a 2.5 because I didn't root for the romance in the end and I personally felt the hero was better off without the heroine.

Of a temporary roommate situation and 30 coupons

Hi, everyone!

How's your week so far? I've been in a blah mood ever since I came back from Australia; I spent a week in Perth and another week in Sydney, and I truly have been living my best life *sniffs*. If you're interested, I documented my travels on my Instagram

Reading wise, I did zero reading on vacation, LOL. That's why now that I'm home I've been finishing books left and right, and also in a state of panic because I'm so behind on ARCs.

Today, I'm talking about a book I recently finished (and it's a newly released too!). I actually planned to review this book along with another two books (Kate Clayborn's Luck of the Draw and Lucy Parker's Making Up--both also A+ reads, trust me) but I ended up talking too much about this one so yeah, you're getting a solo review instead HAHAH.

The Love Coupon

How many coupons does it take to fall in love?

Flick Dalgetty knows what she wants and how to get it, which is why she’s about to start her dream job in Washington. Until then, she needs somewhere to crash, and Tom O’Connell’s place is her sole option. He’s a repressed, antisocial ogre...but man can he kiss.

For Tom, being around Flick is like being too close to the sun. Her untamed energy is overwhelming, and he’d spontaneously combust if he had to live with her long-term. Housemates with benefits—and an expiration date—suits him just fine.

Then Flick gives Tom thirty coupons, each entitling him to one obligation-free activity, from bowling and bubble-bathing to morning delight, removing all the guesswork from being incompatible partners and shifting their fling into high gear.

Now the problem is their arrangement is drawing to a close, and they might be falling in love—and there wasn’t a coupon for that.

I love Ainslie's The Love Experiment with all my heart, and I've gushed about it on this blog too. I kept putting off reading this ARC because I knew I'd be wanting more after I finish, and I wanted to spare myself the pain. I made the right decision for once because Ainslie's coming out with a new book in May so I don't have to wait that long (oyeaaaaaaa).

Just like The Love Experiment, the biggest reason why I love The Love Coupon is the characters. I'd love to be best friends with Flick, I think she's a riot. I love her drive and ambition, and how she wouldn't sacrifice her goals for anything or anyone. I'm also still pissed that she didn't give up on her no-good family members, but her loyalty streak is admirable.

"You're a rodeo, Flick Dalgetty. Always trying to throw me off."

While I love Flick, the star of the show for me is Tom. I adore Tom, stiff and repressed as he is. I thought Jack Haley was a grouch, but Tom O'Connell was the definition of the word. He runs on tight rails (Tom's words) and prefers everything a certain way--his way. He is the product of his childhood and strict upbringing, and you really couldn't fault him for being such a cold fish at times. Did I mention that he also cooks and bakes and can be wild in bed if he lets himself lose control? I'm marrying Tom, brb.

Now that I think about it, Tom reminds me of one of my favourite Cara McKenna heroes, Duncan Welch. They would totally hit it off, I feel.

"But this was Tom, and no matter how much he let go, he wouldn't deliberately hurt her. He didn't know how."

I really enjoyed the ups and downs of Tom and Flick's roomie relationship, the sexual tension between them, and the sexy games they ended up playing with each other and of course, how they fell in love with each other. I love how Flick casually invaded Tom's life, dismantled everything, and basically taught him to lighten up and live a little, and Tom just let her do it. There is also a bit of angst and intensity in this book that I love, especially in the sexy scenes. I'm going to sound crass but oh my God have I ever read a more intense blowjob scene than the one in this book oh my God-

"She was lovesick over him. She'd couponed herself into a corner and she was going to break her own heart."

The only beef I have with this book is the coupons bit. It was introduced probably 60% into the story, and on the one hand, I didn't really mind because the way Ainslie wrote the placement made sense. But on the other hand, I went in expecting the coupons to be an important part of the story the way the questionnaire did in The Love Experiment, so...

That being said, it wasn't a big deal to me as a whole because I was completely engrossed in whatever's happening between Tom and Flick anyway, but other people might feel differently.

Overall, I expected The Love Coupon to wow me, and it really did. The groveling scene is A+. For you who love music with your books, Ainslie put it a lot of songs in the story. I highlighted every song mention to make myself a little playlist--and turns out Ainslie already included the list of songs at the end of the story, LOL. I also did a little digging around Ainslie's website and found that we can expect one more book in this series, and I'm already super hyped.

Have you read Ainslie Paton's works?

Virgin Heroes, Age Gaps & A Whole Lot of Romance Books For Your TBR

Happy Tuesday, loves!

How's everyone doing? I'm swamped with school work, but of course, still procrastinating studying by reading as many romance novels as I can. I read a couple of great romance novels last week, and I can't wait to share my thoughts with you. Later in the post, I also share some books recently added to my TBR. One can never have too many romance novels in one's TBR!

OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOR by Ainslie Paton [★★]

Well folks, I think it's safe to admit that I love Ainslie Paton's writing. Offensive Behavior was only my second book from her, but I love the way she crafts her romances. I was chatting with the author on Twitter and basically admitted to my full-blown love affair with grumpy, buttoned-up heroes, when she told me all about her grumpy heroes. Ainslie was kind enough to send this broke college student review copies, so THANK YOU, Ainslie! Anyways, this was the first book I picked up from the ones she sent for one simple reason - VIRGIN HERO. And she certainly delivered on that front. Reid isn't the sort of man you'd think would be a virgin. I mean the guy is a drunk who frequents strip clubs after all. And usually the broody kind of hero is known to be quite proficient in bedroom activities, but not this one. He could honestly be a class-A jackass from time to time, but this was a guy with principles. I loved that when he made mistakes, he repented AND groveled. Hello, I'm a sucker for a groveling hero! Zarley was an even greater girl! After a failed Olympic career, she has had to turn to dancing at a gentleman's club to afford school and life. She's sharp, brutally honest, and has a heart of gold. Both these characters are slightly messed up, but together they start to untangle all that messiness. I loved how well-developed the relationship between the two was. It starts of as a sexual education of sorts, but grows into something much more intimate than that. Ainslie Paton writes great romance, and even banter, dialogues and sexy times. Phew! The sexy times are wild, and steamy and fan-yourself hot! I was honestly into the book from start to finish, it's so addictive. I also really enjoyed the glimpses of the secondary characters here. I'm eager to read the next books as soon as I get a chance! If you haven't discovered Ainslie Paton yet, then change that ASAP, because she knows what she's doing with romance!

Can you fall in love in thirty-six questions?

The closest rookie lifestyle writer Derelie Honeywell gets to megastar reporter Jackson Haley is an accidental shoulder brush in The Courier's elevator. That is, until the love experiment: a study designed to accelerate intimacy using thirty-six questions and four minutes of sustained eye contact.

As far as Derelie is concerned, Jack Haley has always been a man best imagined in his underwear. He's too intimidating otherwise. But participating in the love experiment is her make-or-break chance. With another round of layoffs looming, Derelie knows holding on to her job means getting the story no matter what. Even when the what is kissing Jack like a maniac.

Jack Haley has zero interest in participating in a clickbait story. He didn't plan on finding Derelie smart and feisty and being mesmerized by her eyes. He certainly had no intention at all of actually falling in love with her.

The conclusion to this experiment? Thirty-six questions might lead to love, but finding the answer to happily-ever-after is a lot more complicated.

OMG I have so many feelings about this book! I initially planned to do a mini review on it in my Thursday post, but it ended up being too long so I decided to let it have its own spot, LOL.

I have Nick to thank for putting this book on my radar. Look at that cover! All the colours drew me in, and when I read the first chapter I was immediately hooked. Nick also did a mini review about this book here.

Three Romances From Non-American Authors

Hello friends!

My summer vacation is over, and I'm now back in Philadelphia. I was super sad to leave my parents, and I'm currently very home-sick, and also battling with an annoying case of jet-lag that won't go away. :( Anyways, the last few days I was home, I read a bunch of romance novels because romance novels always cheer me up.

Check out my thoughts for a couple of them below!
ACT LIKE IT by Lucy Parker [★★★★★]
Act Like It is one of my all-time favorite romance books. I first read the book in 2016 and fell in love with every word of it. I've since re-read the book twice, both this year. If that's not a sign of how much I love a book then I don't know how to word the depth of my fondness for Lucy's writing. Fake relationship romances are always so charming for some reason. You as a reader know that the couple will get together, so watching them initially try hard to battle it out is just an inexplicable experience. Act Like It stands out for me because of the characters. I love them all so damn much. Lainie, with her heart of gold, is so endearing. Her kindness, her loyalty and her wit make her character that's very much likeable. Then, there's grumpy-ass Richard, who has got a bit of a reputation, but who somehow finds a way under your skin, and settles in your heart. I love that even as his and Lainie's relationship progresses, he remains the class-a grump that he is. His brutal honesty is very much refreshing, and I just love this character with all my heart. The progression of the romance between Richard and Lainie is done so beautifully. Lucy Parker takes her time to develop the relationship, and we get to experience every small moment that furthers this bond between the two. It's heartwarming, and pure, and so so lovely. I melt every time I think of this pair. What's even greater is that we see the connection the two form. Not only that, they make each other better. Can you ask anything more than that from a romance? Anyways, if you haven't read this book yet, please do it. Then pick up Pretty Face as well, because OTP!!
