Can't-Wait Wednesday (7): Devil's Daughter by Lisa Kleypas

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings to spotlight and discuss the yet-to-be released books we're excited to read. It is based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

Hi everyone!

It's a new Wednesday and as usual I'm here to share with you another one of my anticipated titles.

Lisa's Sunday Update (2)

Hi guys!

I haven't done a proper reading update in a while, welp. I have been sharing Can't Wait Wednesdays just to post something but I'm going to try and do better from now on.

It's the weekend and I have a new appreciation for it now, because I just started my full-time job on Wednesday! That's right, your girl is no longer funemployed and is now a working professional. The job isn't my first choice and isn't something I ever imagine myself doing in a million years, but it pays well and should be a good experience. I need to fund my book-buying habits and hopefully save some money for travel, LOL.

Today I'll be sharing some mini reviews of the books I read...a week ago? Two weeks ago? I can't remember the last time I finished a book because I've been in a weird headspace since I was confirmed for the job. I told my sister that I haven't touched my iPad since I started working and she was like, "Are you okay?"

Onwards!

Detective Sawyer Matthews isn’t just having a bad day—he’s having the worst day. His hunt for the criminal who killed his team member has stalled and now… he’s got to play nice with his new, totally unwanted partner. It’s not that she isn’t qualified, or that he doesn’t like her—it’s because he knows what she looks like naked. So very, very naked.
Brooke Simmons finally landed her dream job working for H.E.A.T, an elite undercover detective squad, and she’s not giving up simply because she had a one-night-stand with her sullen—but undeniably sexy—new partner. They’ll just have to keep it professional. Easier said than done, considering their first case requires Sawyer to infiltrate a drug cartel operating out of a male strip show. Watching him do his best Magic Mike impression every night isn’t just hot—it’s torture.
Sawyer doesn’t need any distractions, yet his attraction to Brooke is explosive and he can’t resist going for round two. Or three. Or four. But as their investigation progresses and danger mounts, they’ll have to put their jobs, hearts, and lives on the line to fight… for each other, for survival, and for justice.

Unique Settings, Slut-Shaming & Cheese-Fests

Hi everyone!

How are you all doing? I had to take a mini break from posting last week as I was swamped with school work. I haven't been reading as much sadly. I did get to read some romance reads, as always, but nothing that has really blown my mind since I last posted here. I'll be reviewing A Daring Arrangement and Wish You Were Mine in this post!

A DARING ARRANGEMENT by Joanna Shupe [1/2]

A Daring Arrangement wasn't entirely on my radar until I started to see some heavy buzz come in around release week from favorite book bloggers. They all made it seem amazing, so I knew I had to get to this myself, especially as I was feeling in a historical romance mood.

This book was my first historical romance set in the Gilded Age, and I was fascinated by the time period all throughout the book. I love reading about the culture and lifestyle of folks back in the day, and this one definitely explored that here. I mean this book starts off with a raging party that involves horses. Aren't you intrigued? I totally was!

I really liked the characters in A Daring Arrangement. After her father discovers her affair with an artist back in England, Nora's father ships her off to America in the hopes that she finds a rich and respectable husband there. Nora is determined to return to her love, so she decides to get involved with a man she knows her father won't approve of. This is when she meets the hero of the book, Julius, a man with a reputation of being wild despite his growing wealth. I enjoyed getting to know both characters, particularly Julius. He has had to make many sacrifices in order to become the man he is, but society still doesn't fully embrace him despite his wealth and status. I also liked Nora, since she was smart, and went after what she wanted, but I'll admit that there were times when she was quite naive.

The romance between the two only slowly develops. I love the trope of a fake-relationship, and it was done fairly well in A Daring Arrangement. I did think in general the couple didn't have as much chemistry as I would have liked. There was sexual tension, sure, but something was missing for me to fully become absorbed in these two. I also think Nora's love for her struggling artist in England loomed over their relationship quite a bit. I felt like the transition from her falling out of love with Robert to her falling in love with Julius wasn't as smooth, and to me, it veered very very close to cheating when the two give in to their passion.

Despite my issues, I liked the book enough and I'm curious about who the next couple will be, so I'll most definitely be picking up the rest of the series.
WISH YOU WERE MINE by Tara Sivec [★★]

The pretty cover of Wish You Were Mine immediately reeled me in. Unfortunately, this just wasn't the book for me. I found the story to be incredibly cheesy, but what was worse was the amount of slut-shaming in the story that completely ruined the book for me.

Wish You Were Mine opened up with an emotional letter written by Aiden to his friend, Everett, after his passing. It was devastating, and broke my heart, but it also built up my hopes that this book would be profound and amazing. While there certainly were moments of those throughout the book, especially through some of the flashback scenes of the three characters as children, the occasional slut-shaming in the book and the story veering into Nicholas Spark cheese tainted my experience. I can't exactly say that I cared for either of the main characters. They were difficult in my opinion, a little immature, and needed to learn to communicate. Everett and Cameron were melodramatic characters, in my opinion, and made mountains out of molehills. Their emotions and angst came across as incredibly forced to me, and I felt like their relationship with each other totally defined them as characters. I wanted to see more of their personalities beyond the surface level that was explored here.

The romance between the two had the potential to be an amazing second chance romance, but again the forced angst, and the cheesy moments peppered here and there. Everett and Cameron needed to communicate with each other, but that was entirely missing from the story until the very end. There were some scenes that I liked between the two, especially the ones that involved the camp owned by Cameron's parents, but beyond that, the two of them just weren't as memorable for me. And like I said, I hated how Cameron viewed every girl who was interested in either Aiden or Everett as a "skank". It was demeaning, and uncalled for! It's ridiculous that slut-shaming is still prevalent in romance novels.

Simply put, Wish You Were Mine had too many tropes that I didn't care for. If the summary seems like a story that might be for you, go for it!

Virgin Heroes, Age Gaps & A Whole Lot of Romance Books For Your TBR

Happy Tuesday, loves!

How's everyone doing? I'm swamped with school work, but of course, still procrastinating studying by reading as many romance novels as I can. I read a couple of great romance novels last week, and I can't wait to share my thoughts with you. Later in the post, I also share some books recently added to my TBR. One can never have too many romance novels in one's TBR!

OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOR by Ainslie Paton [★★]

Well folks, I think it's safe to admit that I love Ainslie Paton's writing. Offensive Behavior was only my second book from her, but I love the way she crafts her romances. I was chatting with the author on Twitter and basically admitted to my full-blown love affair with grumpy, buttoned-up heroes, when she told me all about her grumpy heroes. Ainslie was kind enough to send this broke college student review copies, so THANK YOU, Ainslie! Anyways, this was the first book I picked up from the ones she sent for one simple reason - VIRGIN HERO. And she certainly delivered on that front. Reid isn't the sort of man you'd think would be a virgin. I mean the guy is a drunk who frequents strip clubs after all. And usually the broody kind of hero is known to be quite proficient in bedroom activities, but not this one. He could honestly be a class-A jackass from time to time, but this was a guy with principles. I loved that when he made mistakes, he repented AND groveled. Hello, I'm a sucker for a groveling hero! Zarley was an even greater girl! After a failed Olympic career, she has had to turn to dancing at a gentleman's club to afford school and life. She's sharp, brutally honest, and has a heart of gold. Both these characters are slightly messed up, but together they start to untangle all that messiness. I loved how well-developed the relationship between the two was. It starts of as a sexual education of sorts, but grows into something much more intimate than that. Ainslie Paton writes great romance, and even banter, dialogues and sexy times. Phew! The sexy times are wild, and steamy and fan-yourself hot! I was honestly into the book from start to finish, it's so addictive. I also really enjoyed the glimpses of the secondary characters here. I'm eager to read the next books as soon as I get a chance! If you haven't discovered Ainslie Paton yet, then change that ASAP, because she knows what she's doing with romance!

“What even is a post title if not an added stress?” –a soliloquy

Hello, everyone!

I can't believe October is almost over and we're approaching the second last month of 2017. I'm so ready for 2018 because 2018 releases!!! I'm going to make a list of my 2018-anticipated books sometime soon.

Reading update: I'm behind on my October ARCs and I'm a bit stressed out. I feel like my reading momentum this month is not as high as I wanted it to be, and some days I feel like reading is such a chore... Time for a reset.

Anyway, I managed to finish and review a couple of books which I'll be sharing in this post. Now, onwards!

After a very public breakup with a media-hungry politician, fitness trainer Tori Alvarez escapes to Aruba for rest, relaxation, and copious amounts of sex on the beach—the cocktail, that is. She vows to keep her vacation a man-free zone but when a cute guy is seated next to her on the plane, Tori can’t resist a little harmless flirting.
Hollywood heartthrob Carter Stone underwent a dramatic physical transformation for his latest role and it’s clear his stunning seat mate doesn’t recognize the man beneath the shaggy beard and extra lean frame. Now Carter needs help rebuilding his buff physique and Tori is perfect for the job. It doesn’t hurt that she makes his pulse pound in more ways than one.
Sparks are flying, until a pesky paparazzo reveals Carter’s identity. Tori is hurt and pissed. She wants nothing to do with another man in the limelight, but she’s still got to whip him into shape. Can Carter convince Tori he’s worth the threat to her privacy that comes with dating a famous actor, or will Tori chisel him down to nothing before he even gets the chance?
Grab the popcorn...
I had so much fun reading this book!

The story is fast paced, and yet the romance build-up is slow and steady. Tori and Carter both had my heart from the start. I love them as individual characters and together as a couple. They were so right for each other! There was so much chemistry between them that ending up together was inevitable. I love how easy their friendship, and then relationship, was. I also love how smitten Carter was with Tori—this dude saw Tori on the plane and be like, “Yep, that’s my future wife.” And he fell even harder for her as the story progressed and they got to know each other. Tori and Carter both had their own hang-ups, but they worked through their issues together. They also maintained honest communication with each other, which I appreciate that so much. I just hate when characters jumped to conclusions and did not talk to each other—I’m not about that drama.

Do you need more romance books in your TBR piles? Of course, you do!

Hello friends!

I'm still in more of a mystery/suspense/phase at the moment, so that's what I have mostly been reading. But like always I was able to sneak in some romance novels that I'm happy to share with you all. I have to say, I haven't been overly impressed by any romance novel in particular lately. The ones I've read have been fun to read, but most also weren't memorable. I want something to completely sweep me off my feet! So if you have any recommendations, feel free to let me know in the comments below!

I'm also sharing with you all 6 books I've recently added to my TBR at the bottom of this post. Hope you guys find something to add to your TBRs too! :)

Let's take a look at the books I read since last week!
HEAD OVER HEELS by Jennifer Dawson [★★★]
Received for review purposes. This does not affect my opinion of the book.

I have had ups and downs with the Something New series, but for the most part it's been an enjoyable series. I had no idea the author was continuing on with the books, but I was eager to learn of Head Over Heels' existence. To be honest I couldn't remember the two main characters here from the previous books. Even after I was done reading Head Over Heels I couldn't remember them! I know I have a very poor book memory but usually I'll remember as I read the book. Anyways, back to talking about the book. This is the story of Sophie and Ryder. Sophie is caught in the middle of a scandal that she had nothing to do with, but that ultimately leaves her jobless and her reputation in Chicago destroyed. She accepts a temporary short-term job in Revival, a small town, where a couple of her best friends live. Sophie is a smart woman who possesses a lot of drive and determination. She puts all her efforts into whatever task she is responsible for, and that's a quality I admired and loved about her. After being burned by love, she is also a little reserved emotionally, and is afraid to risk her heart. Enter her landlord Ryder, a handsome bad boy who also happens to be a sheriff in town. On their first meeting, Sophie decides that even though she's wildly attracted to Ryder, she dislikes him for some unknown unexplained reason. This dislike she has for him really confused me, and actually bothered me. It felt like it was done to sort of manufacture a hate-to-love romance, and it didn't work all that well for me. So even though there were qualities I liked about Sophie, her reaction to Ryder left me annoyed. I wasn't entirely keen on Ryder either. I mean he's a typical alpha her, with not a lot of anything else going on for him. The other male characters in this series have had more defining qualities to them, so I found Ryder to be very underwhelming. The romance between the two certainly had a lot of sexual chemistry. There's no doubt that Jennifer Dawson knows her way around tension between her couples. I can't exactly pinpoint why though, but even though Sophie and Ryder had a ton of chemistry together, I wasn't feeling them 100%. Maybe it's because a lot of time is spent on the actual physical aspects of the relationship over building an emotional connection? After a while, I got real tired of hearing about their sexy shenanigans, and wanted to see them connect on a more intimate level. What I loved in Head Over Heels though was seeing all the previous couples. They are all so cute, and I loved the glimpses into their lives. Head Over Heels is a very readable book because Jennifer Dawson has such a great addicting writing style, but I'm not overly impressed by Head Over Heels.
